U-Mall Training

Training is a top priority for the Davis Fire Department. Firefighters work diligently to keep skills in forcible entry, search and rescue, hazardous materials/conditions, and rope rescue up to date to provide the best service to the community.

In October of 2023, DFD participated in a large-scale training at the now demolished U-Mall location. The training required multiple agencies and crews to engage in fire simulations to practice suppression techniques, ventilation methods, forcible entry and search and rescue operations in a commercial setting. They also participated in incident command system drills to ensure effective communication and coordination. Afterward, a comprehensive debriefing allowed agencies to discuss actions, share insights, and identify areas for improvement, ultimately enhancing readiness and fostering stronger inter-agency relationships to improve community safety during complex emergencies.

Confined Space Rescue

The Davis Fire Department plays a crucial role in confined space rescue, responding to incidents where individuals may be trapped in areas with limited access and potential hazards. Firefighters receive specialized training in identifying the unique dangers associated with confined spaces, such as toxic atmospheres, low oxygen levels, and the risk of entrapment. They utilize advanced equipment, including gas detectors, specialized air and communication lines, technical rope systems and harnesses, to ensure the safety of both the rescuers and the victims. Their expertise and preparedness are vital for conducting safe and efficient rescues in these challenging environments.

Truck Training

The Davis Fire Department is in the process of putting a brand-new ladder truck in service. We are conducting extensive ladder truck training to ensure firefighters are proficient in operating and maneuvering the apparatus safely and effectively. This training includes learning the various types of ladders, understanding their components, and practicing skills such as positioning the truck, extending the aerial ladder, and performing rescues from heights. Firefighters engage in simulations that replicate real-life scenarios, including navigating obstacles and managing weight limits for aerial operations. Additionally, training emphasizes safety protocols, communication, and teamwork, as firefighters must work cohesively to execute operations efficiently. Regular drills and assessments will help maintain high levels of readiness and ensure all personnel are familiar with the equipment and procedures.

Trench Rescue

With new and existing construction comes trenching; a long, deep cut in the ground used for laying water, sewage, and electrical pipes. Some trenches can be as deep as 30 feet. While working in a trench a worker can become engulfed by collapsing soil and require rescue.

Through the act of shoring the walls of the trenches with wood, and using specialty devices to stabilize the walls in place, firefighters can safely make their way to the patient and continue the rescue operation. After gaining access to the patient, through continuous digging and communication, they must receive emergency medical attention as soon as possible. These techniques can also be used in landslide and structural collapses.

Auto Extrication

The Davis Fire department responds to many severe auto accidents on I-80 and the County roads requiring extrication. The auto extrication training and equipment provide expertise and resources to safely remove trapped individuals from vehicles involved in an accident. Utilizing specialized tools like cutters and spreaders, they carefully dismantle parts of the vehicle while prioritizing the safety of both the victims and the rescue team. Their swift response and specialized training are vital in minimizing injury and saving lives.

EMS for further treatment. The primary goal is to save lives while minimizing risks to both victims and rescue personnel.
