Tree Removal and Modification Requests
Trees and canopy cover are essential to the City of Davis and to the community's health, safety, welfare and tranquility. They provide crucial benefits to our environment, including wildlife habitat, contribute positively to the health and well-being of residents and visitors, and encourage investment in our local economy. To maximize these benefits and promote health, safety and longevity in the urban forest, it is vital to maintain our trees and proactively manage the urban forest to promote resilience and sustainability. The City’s urban forest shall be prudently protected and managed to secure these benefits.
What Trees Require an Approved Permit to Work on in Davis?
City trees are protected trees planted by the City in the 10-foot easement on private property fronting public streets, and trees on city-owned property, including parks and greenbelts.
Trees of Significance are protected trees planted on commercial, multifamily properties and homeowner’s association common area properties that measure five inches or greater in diameter at breast height.
Landmark Trees are protected trees that have been determined by resolution of the city council to be of high value because of its species, size, age, form, historical significance, or some other professional criterion.
Private trees that would otherwise not be protected are protected when any permit is pulled for work on that property (including, but not limited to, ADU and pool installations, driveway replacements, etc.)
An approved permit is required prior to any substantial pruning work or removal of City or Private/Protected trees. Activities in the areas around these trees that may impact roots could also require a permit or City review, depending on the nature of the proposed work.
If you would like to confirm if a tree on your property is a city tree or a private tree you can contact the City of Davis Urban Forestry Division and request an ownership check. Please email CityTrees@cityofdavis.org or call 530-757-5633 and provide your address and be as specific as you can in reference to which trees you would like to be looked at when requesting an ownership check.
