At the start of the UFMP development process, goals and objectives for public engagement were identified to promote engagement with a diverse range of residents, populations, community organizations, and City staff.  Targeted outreach and multiple types of engagement opportunities were facilitated to (1) elicit information from community members and (2) provide information about the urban forest, planning process and recommendations. Throughout the process, the Urban Forestry Division received input on the community’s current impressions, experiences, and goals for services and programming, including impressions about the current state of the urban forest and vision for the future. Throughout the public engagement process, the appreciation of trees and desire for a thriving urban forest was clear. Community members expressed a desire for proactive and responsive maintenance of city trees and clear guidance for the care of private trees within the community. 

In person and virtual opportunities for community engagement included: 

• A photography competition to bring awareness of the UFMP development, provide a public engagement opportunity, and showcase submissions to foster community pride.

• Tree Commission meetings to provide a platform for regular updates on the planning process and discussion on direction. Commissions and community members weighed in on the 2002 CFMP goals and vision to determine their relevance and add additional priorities they would like to see addressed in the UFMP.

• Virtual comment opportunities through an online link on the City’s website to capture comments from community members, including those who were unable or uninterested in attending the in-person workshops or virtual meetings.

• Pop-up workshops held alongside other events (Great Tree Bike Tour and Farmers Market) to capture the input of community members that dropped in to ask questions and provide feedback. 

• Virtual Community Meetings two virtual community meetings were held. The first included a presentation explaining the UFMP process, summarizing the information on land cover and tree canopy, and a discussion time to ask for specific feedback. The second meeting (pending) provided an overview of the UFMP and updated the community on how their feedback was integrated and the next steps.

Community Engagement by Numbers

A critical component of the UFMP development process is benchmarking existing conditions as well as any challenges and opportunities for managing trees and the urban forest. To help with this process, we identified collaborators that have (or have had) an impact on planning, caring for, or affecting policy for Davis’ urban forest. These individuals and groups were engaged in plan development through a variety of means, including:

• Questionnaire and follow up interviews to better understand urban forest collaborators roles and interests in the urban forest. These provided collaborators an opportunity to share perspectives and thoughts on current programming as well as the plan development process.

• Operations review to document current programming and challenges and opportunities in the day to day management of the city tree resource and broader urban forest.

• Working group meetings and regular status calls to bring the UFMP development team together for regular check in points that guided the direction of the planning process and ensured the timeline and scope were followed.
