Tree Removal/ Modification Requests
City trees must be requested for removal. The City of Davis Tree Commission reviews and makes a determination on tree removal at the monthly Tree Commission meetings.
To submit a removal request to the Tree Commission complete the Street Tree Removal Request located in the quick documents menu on the Urban Forestry home page. If the tree is dead or in an imminently hazardous condition please call the Urban Forestry Division at (530) 757-5633.
The Tree Commission does not have the authority to recommend the removal of a City Tree for its debris, such as leaves, fruit, nuts, pollen, pine cones, needles, etc., nor does it have the authority to recommend the removal of a tree for its potential as an allergen or for solar collector installation per Municipal Code Section 40.38.00. The Tree Commission does not have the authority to remove a tree if it is healthy. The Commission looks at the following criteria when evaluating a tree removal request:
- Dead tree
- Sick tree
- Split tree
- Leaning tree
- Root damage
- Increasing limb failures
Trees on commercially or multi-family zoned properties are governed by the Tree Preservation Ordinance and require a Tree Modification Permit for pruning and removal.

The City plants trees between October and March. Replacements for removed trees will be planted during those months. Tree species selection will be determined in conjunction with the Urban Forest Manager. To view a list of trees that may be available see the Master Tree List.
Evaluation of City tree(s)
To request an evaluation of a City tree contact the Urban Forestry Division at (530) 757-5633 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org and a work request will be generated. The City tree(s) will be evaluated by the Urban Forest Manager for the following:
- City/resident ownership questions
- Tree stake removal/replacement
Tree work will be prescribed as necessary.
What is a City Tree?
Any tree planted, maintained, and/or assumed by the City of Davis within the public easement, which is a ten foot strip inside the curb or the back edge of the sidewalk, running parallel to the street, and is a tree species which is listed on the current and/or past Master Street Tree List. All new replacements will be selected from the current approved list. The current Master Street Tree List supersedes any or all others upon annual review and approval by City Council action.
