Sprinkler Irrigation - Maximum of 3 Days Per Week

Sprinkler Irrigation is limited to a maximum of three days per week. The watering restrictions only apply to sprinkler/spray irrigation and do not apply to other methods of irrigation such as drip systems and hand-watering.

The weather in California is highly variable with prolonged dry periods and intervals of significant precipitation. The City has permanent mandatory water-use restrictions in place to conserve water year-round no matter the weather. Learn more below.

Landscape Water-Use Restrictions

No watering of outdoor landscapes in a manner that causes more than incidental runoff such as minimal overspray from sprinklers that escapes the area of intended use.
No landscape watering between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. except with a hand-held container or hose with a shut-off nozzle, or for very short periods when adjusting a sprinkler system. Low volume irrigation systems (such as drip irrigation, soaker hoses and micro-irrigation) are exempt from this restriction.
No irrigation of turf and/or ornamental landscapes during and within 48 hours after measurable rainfall of ¼ inch or more.
New construction of homes and buildings must install irrigation systems following the requirements of the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO) and other regulations.
No irrigation of turf on public street medians or publicly owned and maintained landscaped areas between the street and sidewalk.
Sprinkler/spray irrigation is restricted to a maximum of three days per week. The restrictions do not apply to drip irrigation or other low-volume irrigation systems.

Commercial Water-Use Restrictions

Eating or drinking establishments shall only serve drinking water upon patron request.
Restaurants are required to use a pre-rinse spray valve when washing dishes.
Hotels and motels shall provide guests with the option to decline daily bed linen and towel changes. Notice of this option must be prominently displayed in each guestroom.
In-bay car washes or conveyor car washes permitted and constructed after January 1, 2014, shall use recirculating water systems.

Other Water-Use Restrictions

A hose that dispenses potable water to wash a motor vehicle shall be fitted with a shut-off nozzle.
Potable water shall not be applied directly to driveways, sidewalks, buildings, structures, patios, parking lots, or other hard surfaced areas unless required for health and safety purposes.
Potable water shall not be used in an ornamental fountain or other decorative water feature or for the filling or topping-off of decorative lakes or ponds except where the water is part of a recirculating system.
All property owners must fix leaks, breaks or malfunctions in water fixtures or water-using or distributing devices when they find them, or within 72 hours of receiving a notice from the City of Davis.
No potable water-use for street cleaning or construction site preparation purposes unless no other method can be used to protect the health and safety of the public.
Homeowners’ associations or community service organizations are prohibited from enforcing actions or imposing or threatening to impose fines for residents reducing or eliminating the watering of vegetation or lawns during a declared drought emergency.
