The City of Davis is reminding residents that City summer recreational activities and programs start on Monday, June 15. An influx of youth pedestrians and bicyclists will be traveling throughout the community for camps and classes. Please travel with extra caution as City parks and facilities will host camps throughout the summer.
The following are tips for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to remain safe and considerate on streets and roads during the summer.
Drivers:
- Provide at least three feet of clearance to bicyclists
- Look before opening driver-side doors
- Check rear and side view mirrors frequently
- Pay attention when driving
Bicyclists:
- Wear helmets
- Ride in the same direction as traffic
- Always stop at stop signs and red lights; follow all traffic laws
- Communicate turns by using hand signals whenever possible
- Look in all directions at intersections or when entering/exiting bike paths
Pedestrians:
- Use sidewalks whenever possible
- Look in all directions when crossing (left, right, left, front and back)
- Whenever possible, cross the street at a corner or a marked crosswalk
- Make eye contact with nearby drivers when crossing the street
The City’s recreational programs and activities are held at many locations, Monday-Friday, with the most active sites being:
- Arroyo Park & Pool Complex
- Cannery Farm House
- Central Park
- Community Park
- Redwood Park
- Slide Hill Park & Manor Pool Complex
- Veterans Memorial Center
Please use extra caution in and around Community Park, which has several construction projects underway including the skate park remodel and a new bathroom complex installation near Community Pool. Bike paths and nearby streets may have construction traffic, so please be alert.
It is the goal of the City’s Parks and Community Services Department to provide safe, positive and fun experiences for all program participants. For additional information about the City of Davis’ recreational activities and programs, visit: https://cityofdavis.org/recguide.
