“We are proud to recognize this year’s recipients of the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards and the Golden Heart Awards,” said Mayor Donna Neville. “These honors highlight the people who make Davis stronger, recognizing those who stand up for civil rights, support others and push through challenges. Their efforts make our community more caring and connected.”

Established in 1986, the Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards recognize local individuals or organizations promoting civil rights, civic engagement or positive human relations and are helping improve the quality of life for Davis residents and visitors. The awards are in memory of Davis High School student Thong Hy Huynh, who was stabbed to death on May 4, 1983, and to help raise awareness for social justice and inclusion.

The Golden Heart Awards were first presented in 1994 to honor the memory of Andrew Mockus, who was tragically killed, by his peers, in 1992. The awards celebrate exceptional young people in the Davis community with a focus on students who may not receive recognition elsewhere. There are two award categories: the Service Award and the Personal Challenge Award. The Service Award honors individuals who have made meaningful contributions to their community, peers, or school. The Personal Challenge Award recognizes those who have faced and overcome significant obstacles in their lives.
