City of Davis Shares Important Public Safety Reminders for Picnic Day 2026

Post Date:April 06, 2026 8:29 am

As Picnic Day approaches on Saturday, April 18, the City of Davis is reminding community members and visitors of important public safety measures and expectations to help ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone. While Picnic Day brings thousands of people together for more than 200 activities hosted by UC Davis, the City is focused on proactive communication, safety awareness and responsible celebration across the community.

To support these efforts, the Davis City Council has approved several measures for Picnic Day weekend, including the following:

  • Safety Enhancement Zones (SEZs): Three designated zones will be in place across the city, including areas such as Slide Hill Park and Walnut Park, where violations may carry increased penalties and will be enforced from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, through 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.
  • Temporary Alcohol Ban in Parks: Alcohol will not be permitted in any City park during the enforcement period from 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, through 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.
  • Increased Enforcement: All local and State laws remain in effect and will be actively enforced throughout the weekend.

Community members are encouraged to report suspicious or illegal activity promptly.

  • For emergencies, including crimes in progress, fires or medical incidents, call 9-1-1 or 530-758-3600.
  • Callers should remain on the line and clearly answer dispatcher questions to help responders.

In addition to these reminders, no special event permits will be given by the City of Davis or any City department for this day to reduce congestion, improve emergency response times and minimize risk associated with overlapping crowds. This applies to all City departments, including permits that may otherwise be processed separately through departments such as Fire or Police. The Parade will also be shortened by one block to support staffing and operational efficiency. The City of Davis will also be increasing police staffing with regional mutual aid, expanding fire and emergency operations, enhancing traffic control and barricades and activating the City’s Emergency Operations Center to monitor conditions in real time. The City is also working closely with UC Davis, local businesses and community organizations to reinforce expectations, improve communication and promote responsible celebration throughout the day.
