The City of Davis and the Human Relations Commission invite the public to attend the 32nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Veterans Memorial Theatre, located at 277 E. 14th Street in Davis.

The theme this year is “Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere: Protecting Democracy and Freedom of Speech,” highlighting Dr. King’s call to stand against injustice, protect democratic values and uphold the fundamental right of free expression in the face of ongoing social challenges.

This free, community-wide event begins at 10 a.m. with an art exhibit showcasing work by local high school students participating in the Ethnic Studies program. The formal program will start at 10:30 a.m. and feature inspirational speakers and musical performances celebrating Dr. King’s lifelong dedication to civil rights, economic democracy and peace. At 11:45 a.m., attendees are invited to take part in a march from the Veterans Memorial Theatre to the Solidarity Space in Central Park.

“This annual celebration provides an important opportunity to honor the lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recommit ourselves to building a community where inclusion is not just an ideal but a lived experience for all,” said City of Davis Mayor Donna Neville. “His work reminds us that unity is built through understanding, empathy and the courage to stand together.”

The family-friendly event will feature youth and adult speakers, live performances, storytelling, and a community sing-along.

La Ciudad de Davis y la comisión de relaciones humanas invitan al público a asistir a la 32.ª celebración anual para Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. durante el lunes 19 de enero en el Teatro Conmemorativo de Veteranos, localizado en 277 E. 14th Street en Davis.

El tema este año es “La injusticia en cualquier lugar es una amenaza a la justicia en todos partes: Protegiendo la democracia y la libertad de expresión,” resaltando la posición de Dr. King contra la injusticia, protegiendo valores democráticos y apoyando el derecho fundamental de expresión libre ante los constantes desafíos sociales.

Este evento comunitario es gratis y comenzara a las 10 de la mañana con una exhibición de arte mostrando el trabajo de los estudiantes de preparatoria que participan en el programa de estudios de etnicidad. El programa formal empezará a las 10:30 de la mañana e incluye oradores inspiracionales y un espectáculo musical que celebra a Dr. King y su dedicación durante toda su vida a los derechos civiles, la democracia económica y la paz. A las 11:45 a.m., los asistentes son invitados a participar en un desfile del Teatro Conmemorativo de Veteranos al espacio de solidaridad en el Parque Central de la Ciudad.
