With the start of the school year, the City of Davis would like to remind residents and families to prioritize safety as children and youth will be biking, walking, scooting or taking public transportation when school starts Aug. 25.
The City urges those using motor vehicles to prioritize safety by:
- Reducing speeds in a school zones
- If driving, please do not double-park or block crosswalks during morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off times
- Avoid U-turns that are unsafe and prohibited in school zones
- Consider parking a block away and walking children to school
- Be mindful of children on bicycles and giving them ample space
- Avoid use of cell phones or other distractions
- Pay close attention to crossing guards and their instructions
The City of Davis has identified Safe Routes to School for every campus to help make active travel safer and more accessible. Find map, available in English and Spanish, by opening the tab “Safe Routes to School Maps” at: www.cityofdavis.org/city-hall/public-works-engineering-and-transportation/transportation. Families with elementary school students can also sign up for Active4.me at www.active4.me/, a program that sends a text alert to parents when their children arrives safely at school.
