The City of Davis is reminding residents that on Monday, June 16, a full summer of recreational activities and programs are starting and an influx of youth pedestrians and bicyclists will be traveling throughout the community for camp, classes and more. Please travel with extra caution as City parks and facilities will host camps throughout the summer.
The following are tips for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to remain safe and considerate on streets and roads during the summer.
Drivers:
- Provide at least three feet of clearance to bicyclists
- Look before opening driver-side doors
- Check rear and side view mirrors frequently
- Pay attention when driving
Bicyclists:
- Wear helmets
- Ride in the same direction as traffic
- Always stop at stop signs and red lights; follow all traffic laws
- Communicate turns by using hand signals whenever possible
- Look in all directions at intersections or when entering/exiting bike paths
Pedestrians:
- Use sidewalks whenever possible
- Look in all directions when crossing (left, right, left, front and back)
- Whenever possible, cross the street at a corner or a marked crosswalk
- Make eye contact with nearby drivers when crossing the street
