On a day that many of us would normally enjoy and celebrate in Davis, our community’s sense of safety and security was shaken.
A large gathering at Community Park on Saturday afternoon was disrupted by the sound of gunfire, causing alarm and confusion among attendees. First responders were already in the vicinity and responded quickly to manage the situation and provide aid to three individuals with non-life-threatening injuries. The victims—two teenagers and a 24-year-old—were transported to the hospital and are currently recuperating.
The Davis Police Department has committed substantial resources to investigating this incident and is actively working with federal and regional partners to use all available resources. Preliminary information indicates this shooting was not motivated by a desire to randomly harm community members. Due to the large number of potential witnesses and evidence, the investigative process will take time. As the Department works through this complex investigation, we ask for patience.
Our community is built on the values of safety, respect and togetherness. While the Davis Police Department and the City of Davis proudly welcome all who share in the spirit of fun, unity and positive gathering, we do not condone violence in any form. We stand firmly against any actions that compromise the wellbeing of our residents, visitors or spaces. Picnic Day, whether on-campus or in the surrounding city, should be a celebration of joy and belonging for everyone.
As we move forward, we encourage everyone to take a moment to breathe, reconnect and ease back into the rhythm of daily life. Take time this week to appreciate and care for the people around you. Challenging moments will pass, and with time, healing and resilience take their place. We continue to be Davis Strong.
The Davis Police Department will continue to provide updates as the investigation continues. You can reach the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400 or policeweb@cityofdavis.org.
