May 2 at 7:25 pm: Unsheltered Community Plan

Post Date:May 02, 2023 7:25 pm

The City of Davis, in partnership and cooperation with Davis Community Meals and Housing, as well as the many local providers who work with unsheltered individuals in the community, has developed and put into motion a plan to provide emergency shelter for individuals in need.

The City will be providing approximately two dozen emergency beds, as well as meals, for individuals willing to be sheltered indoors. Davis Community Meals and Housing was able to call on its staff who assisted with the previous cold weather shelter to assist with the current emergency shelter needs. Davis Community Meals and Housing will be providing capacity at Paul’s Place and the 5th Street location.

In addition, Davis CAN, a new local organization dedicated to affordable housing and the climate change, is assisting with donations, and HEART of Davis is providing meals. The Daytime Respite Center is also adding staffing during daytime hours to speak with and connect resources to the unsheltered. There is also a mobile mental health team and providers to help engage with this community.

Both the City and local providers made outreach visits today to several campsites to encourage people to take shelter. Some individuals preferred to stay outdoors but are planning to be in groups for safety purposes. Providers will continue to check in with people at these locations.

For some more information, you can listen to the Social Services and Housing Director's report at the May 2nd City Council meeting at: https://www.cityofdavis.org/city-hall/city-council/city-council-meetings/meeting-videos.
