Davis Community to Paint Giant Street Mural

North Davis Residents Host Citywide Paint Party October 12-14, 2018

Post Date:September 26, 2018 5:08 pm

During a three-day painting party volunteers will wash the street and greenbelt, chalk the design, and paint a giant ten thousand square foot paint-by-number mural along the greenbelt and onto the cul-de-sac on the west end of Hacienda Avenue.

Called "Elemental", the mural will serve as a new artistic landmark for the city of Davis.  The highly colorful mural will feature animals and plants found in North Davis as well as mystical creatures and symbols important to the cultural heritages of city residents and visitors, who often meet up along the greenbelt.

Master muralist Danielle Fodor designed the creation with the input of more than one hundred Davis residents. “I was the first to suggest a labyrinth, and now the labyrinth is a dragon,” shared Jacquie Kuter, a resident at Atria Covell Gardens, a senior living facility.  “I heard about these projects but I never thought I’d be involved in anything like this.”

The project inspires and unites residents through art. Fodor has designed similar creations in the Chapman and Davis Manor neighborhoods, deepening neighborhood connections and beautifying the city.

“These murals harness the power of the neighborhood while giving voice to the artist inside each of us,” said Fodor. “Painting day is an explosion of energy – with a giant paint by number – where anyone, regardless of age or ability, can take part of the creation of a monumental piece of art.”

This street/greenbelt mural is a project of the City of Davis Arts & Cultural Affairs program, is supported in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, as well as private donors Asphalt Impressions, Dos Coyotes, and over 100 individuals.

The event will be very visual with children and adults painting together.  The public is invited to participate in any of the following activities:
