Mowing and string trimming are not feasible ways to manage the unwanted vegetation as they scatter vegetative material and promote new growth throughout the site. Other species have large roots which disrupts the landscape for desirable plants when dugout or from other cultivating methods.

Explanation of IPM Methods Used: Staff primarily employ non-chemical control methods throughout the Open Space managed sites including mowing, trimming, hoeing, hand pulling and solarization. Prior chemical applications have shown to successfully suppress the undesired vegetation. Past attempts with solarization was shown ineffective to control vegetation on large uneven terrain. Grazing and prescribed fire has been re-incorporated where feasible as a vegetation management tool.

Strategies to Prevent Future Applications: The primary strategy to prevent future herbicide applications is to manage the emerging vegetation and preventing seed-set. This will require at least one well-timed application annually. Additionally, reseeding native plant species to help outcompete and shade-out unwanted weeds. Staff will continue to incorporate grazing and prescribed fire as a vegetation management tool where feasible.

More information on the IPM Program, including the current Policies and Procedures guidance, can be found on the City's webpage: Integrated Pest Management
