EPA Reg #: 62719-742
Pesticide Type: Herbicide
City Use Type: Tier I. Most Hazardous. Most Restrictive.

Target Pests:
Various Broadleaf Weeds, Annual Grasses and Clover

Justification for Use: The use of herbicides are justified as there is a need to maintain these sites from becoming infested with turf weed species that create unsafe conditions for the user groups. The weeds and clover attract stinging insects near the pool areas. This creates a hazard for people with venom allergies. Mechanical control methods can spread some of the weed species from vegetative fragments. The site can and will be closed to the public during application and while the product is incorporated into the soil.

Explanation of IPM Methods Used: Staff primarily employ non-chemical control measures at these sites including turf seeding, aerating, mowing, string trimming, and irrigation control. Mechanical control often spreads the weeds through vegetative fragments. Previous applications of herbicides have shown success at suppressing the amount of clover and broadleaf weeds.

Strategies to Prevent Future Applications: The primary strategy to reduce the need for future herbicide applications is to manage the emerging vegetation and preventing seed-set. This will require at least one herbicide application annually. Over seeding and top dressing will assist in outcompeting the unwanted grasses, clover, and weeds throughout the turf areas.

Tier 1 Remarks: These locations can and will be locked to the public during time of application and while the product fully incorporates into the soil. Staked bio-wattle will be installed around storm drains to protect surface waters from any potential runoff. Additionally, there is a need to use the remaining Tier 1 product in stock at an appropriate/securable site and transition to more effective and less hazardous products.
