Target Pests: Various Broadleaf Weeds and Annual Grasses
Justification for Use: The use of herbicides are justified as there is a need to safely and effectively manage the emerging vegetation and prevent seed set. The medians are filled with decomposed granite or compacted dirt, which can become overgrown with vegetation during the wet season. Safety concerns arise with operators using mechanical tools which may unintentionally scatter median material or debris toward vehicle traffic. Additionally, an increase risk is placed on operators working alongside heavy traffic. The use of Prodiamine/Indaziflam, would help manage the emerging weedy vegetation from the site’s seedbank. Glufosinate Ammonium based herbicides are considered a least-toxic alternative to the use of Glyphosate or similar Tier 1 chemicals that would typically be recommended for this application.
Explanation of IPM Methods Used: Staff and contractors employ primarily non-chemical control measures at the majority of our right-of-way including mowing, trimming, hoeing, and hand pulling where/when feasible. Steaming has been explored with mixed results and risk to operators while accommodating equipment near heavy traffic areas. In 2025, the addition of Homeplate with Cheetah Pro provided longer control for the medians when these products were applied at those locations.
Strategies to Prevent Future Applications: The primary strategy to reduce the need for future herbicide applications is to manage the emerging vegetation and preventing seed-set. Included in this strategy, is the addition of a contact “burn down” herbicide “Homeplate” which will increase the effectiveness of Glufosinate Ammonium. The introduction of a pre-emergent product (i.e. Prodiamine 65WDG or Esplanade 200 SC) will help manage the seedbank. This will require at least one herbicide application annually. Through well-timed herbicide applications, these sites are expected to experience a reduction in future weed infestations. Additionally, hardscaping options are being explored in certain areas, but this may not be feasible for all sites.
