Advanced Health Care Directives

The "Advance Health Care Directive" kit, published by the California Medical Association, is available at the senior center for a donation of $2.50. Assistance is available in filling out the form by scheduling an appointment with Lisa DeAmicis at 757-5696.

Alzheimer's Photo I.D. Program

Do you have a loved one who wanders? This program, sponsored jointly by the Davis Senior Center, the Davis Police Department and the Alzheimer's Society aims at identifying wanderers who might be found confused and alone so that they can be quickly returned to loved ones. To set up an appointment to take the photo and provide other pertinent personal information, call the Senior Center at 757-5696.

"Are You OK?" Phone Calls

This wonderful reassurance service is offered through the Davis Police Department. A daily, computerized phone call to your home asks you to push a button if you are OK. If you don't answer the phone after a few tries, or you don't push the button, the police will come by your home to check on you. To sign up, call the Davis Senior Center at 757-5696.

Brown Bag Pharmacy

An opportunity for seniors to put all prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as all vitamin and herbal supplements taken on a regular basis, place them in a "brown bag" and bring them in to discuss with a pharmacy intern. Here's an opportunity to ask all the questions you want about your medications during a thirty minute appointment! Call the Senior Center at 757-5696 for information on upcoming scheduled visits by pharmacy interns.

Energy Assistance

Forms and assistance in completing them are available for a number of programs that can help you lower your monthly utility costs. Call the Davis Senior Center at 757-5696 for more information.

Family Caregiver Support Program

A resource specialist offers personal assistance with counseling, resource information, and service coordination and placement information. Appointments can be held either at the Senior Center or in the home by calling (530) 681-2050.

Handy Helpers

Do you have light bulbs or a furnace filter that needs changing? Do you wonder how to have a leaky faucet, squeaky door or torn screen repaired? These and other minor home repairs can be done through the Handy Helpers Program. Call us at 757-5696 to schedule a helper''s visit to your home.

Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program - HICAP

If you have questions about Medicare, long-term care, HMOs, or other health insurance matters, make an appointment with a HICAP counselor. Appointments at the center are available on the first and third Thursdays of every month. Call 757-5696.

Homeowner or Renter Assistance Claims

Free homeowner and renter claim assistance is offered to Davis residents through the Homeowner and Renter Assistance (HRA) Volunteer Program sponsored by the Franchise Tax Board. Appointments begin in July and continue through the end of August. They can be scheduled by calling 757-5696.

Income Tax Preparation Assistance

Preparation assistance for taxpayers is available from the beginning of February to April 15th through the AARP Volunteer Tax-Aide Program. The service is designed to help low to moderate income taxpayers - with special emphasis given to those over 60. Volunteers will prepare Federal and California returns (if required) and California part-year resident returns. Volunteers are also trained to do computer returns and to file your returns electronically at no charge. You may call the Senior Center office at 757-5696 for appointments.

Legal Consultations

Davis attorney Bill Kopper, and elderlaw attorney Mark Hyjek, offer free consultations to assess your legal needs and answer any questions you might have. This service is free, and forms are neither provided nor completed during the consultation. Both attorneys are experienced, and have been helpful in advising seniors on issues that are particularly of concern to them, including Social Security, Medi-Cal, powers of attorney, estate planning, and age discrimination. Medical Equipment Loans

Why buy it, when you can borrow it? Check out our supply of wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, portable ramps, commodes, shower chairs, and toilet seat raisers before buying. Our medical equipment lending closet allows you to borrow items, even for a short period of time, making it ideal for out of town visits from loved ones as well. A small donation for the items you use is gratefully accepted. When we are not overstocked, we also accept donations of gently used items to help others in need. Resource Library

The Center keeps a small collection of videos, books, brochures, and other informational materials on caregiving, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's and other dementias. Materials can be checked out for perusal in the home.

Shopping Help

Need help with grocery shopping? If shopping has become a challenge for you, student volunteers from UC Davis are offering to do it for you! Forms and information are available at the senior center. Grocery orders are due at the Senior Center on Fridays for delivery of Tuesdays. Call 757-5696 for more information.

Social Security Representative

A representative from the Social Security Office visits the Senior Center one Wednesday morning every quarter. He is happy to provide you with assistance or answer any questions that you might have on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 757-5696 to verify date and time of the next visit.

Time Off for Caregivers

The Time Off for Caregivers program at the Davis Senior Center is operated by Citizens Who Care, Inc., a private nonprofit organization that has served the needs of the frail elderly in Yolo County and neighboring communities since 1975. This program benefits the caregiver, by giving them a much-needed break from caregiving responsibilities; It also provides the frail elderly with a safe, caring environment within which they can enjoy social interaction in a structured setting. The program takes place on the 2 nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch is included. Call 758-3704 for more information or to sign up for this program.

Veterans Services

Consultations on services available to veterans are available on Mondays, from 8:30 -11:00 a.m. Disability aid, pensions, burial, vocational rehabilitation, dependent's and survivor's benefits, health care, prescription drugs, and life insurance are just some of the areas of assistance available.
