Rutilio Grande, El Salvador
Rutilio Grande, El Salvador (formerly El-Jicaron) is a city founded on an “ideology” of community and empathy. Rutilio Grande was renamed in 1991 in honor for a local religious leader who was murdered by the El-Salvadorian government. Current population is 6.9 million people. Agriculture is the largest source of employment with hundreds of Salvadorans growing small crops of corn and beans on small parcels of land where they live. These same people are working daily as day laborers on big plantations that export sugar, coffee and other crops.
Besides agriculture, assembly of textiles for export in Maquila factories currently employ over 90,000 Salvadorans.
