Kids:

Show us your Street Smarts by creating your own traffic safety poster. Enter for the chance to win great prizes and have your design featured in Street Smarts materials.

Contest Goal:

We hope you will learn about traffic safety while showing us your creative designs and messages. Winners will see their artwork displayed on Street Smarts materials throughout the city.

Contest Rules

What to do:

• Do fill out the entry form and include it with your submission
• Do write your name, grade, teacher and school on the back of your artwork
• Do use 11×17 or 8½×11 white paper. Medium- or heavy-weight paper is best, but regular paper is fine
• Do select one of these themes:
  1. Proper helmet use when riding on a bike, scooter or skates
  2. Safe bicycle riding
  3. Crossing the street safely
• Do focus on one topic
• Do include the Street Smarts logo (the triangle with the light bulb)
• Do hand-draw your artwork
• Do submit your poster to City of Davis Public Works, 1717 Fifth St., no later than 5 p.m. October 31, 2008

What not to do:

• Don’t use a computer to create the artwork
• Don’t create 3-D effects, for example, using glitter or puffy paint
• Don’t use other people’s artwork to create your own (magazine, stickers, ads or any other copyrighted material)
• Don’t fold your artwork; roll it up or keep it flat
• Don’t forget to have fun!

Judging criteria

Your artwork will be judged based on the following criteria:

• Clear communications of the traffic safety theme
• Originality
• Visual design and composition
• Story-telling ability (does your artwork tell a story?)
• Must be enrolled in a Davis elementary school or a home-schooled student living in Davis

Save the Date: Winners will be announced at the 2008 Street Smarts Poster Contest Awards Ceremony to be held Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Center.

Where to submit your entry

Entries should be mailed or dropped off at the City of Davis Public Works Administration Building at 1717 Fifth St.
